Its All Free and Easy at the Library
Public libraries offer free computers and internet access. Use their equipment to surf the internet, word process and access the free Hotmail (e-mail) website.

Computer Equipment
Consider what kinds of tasks you want your computer to do before aquiring equipment:
  • Internet Access
  • Word Processing
  • Printing
  • Record DVDs or CDs
  • Computer Gaming
Companies sell "bundles" of computer products together to make it easier and cheaper for the consumer.

A Home Computer Needs 4 Things for Internet Access
  • modem
  • data-carrying cable
  • live phone jack
  • internet service provider
Internet Service Providers
There are many different ISPs. The faster internet surfing speeds will require the more expensive DSL.

Generally with DSL service you are given a DSL modem free. DSL allows phone and internet usage at the same time.

Dial-up service is much slower (and cheaper). This works with the internal modem cards that even the older computers should have. Dial-up access does NOT allow phone and internet usage at the same time. There is at least 1 free dial-up service (it is very slow) that offers 10 hours a month of free access. http://www.netzero.net/
