7th Grade World History – 1st grading period

 

Performance Assessments

 

Students may be required to complete one or more of the following assessments: geographical mapping activity, essay test, Islam research packet, Islam flipbook, PowerPoint presentation, multiple-choice test, historical fiction literature review

 

Grading Procedure

 

All students must pass with a “C” or better (70%) in their performance grade, or they will be placed in a second history class (CLM) to master the standards for the grading period.

 

A   Advanced Grade: Student demonstrates a clear understanding of the contributions of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the origins, beliefs and spread of Islam.  The student makes few mistakes, and applies social studies skills (mapping, timeline, research, interpretation, etc.) with confidence.  The student should be able to discuss the topics listed below.

 

B  Proficient Grade: Much understanding, some mistakes

 

      C   Basic Grade: Enough understanding to pass, despite mistakes

 

D   Below Basic Grade: Only sometimes shows understanding, many mistakes

 

F  Far Below Basic Grade: Rarely shows understanding, many mistakes

Use your History book ACROSS THE CENTURIES to answer these Objectives. If you are able to answer and understand these objectives, this will have shown that you have competency in each unit of study in 7th grade World History. You may also use these objectives as a means of studying for any test given per chapter or Unit of study.

 

Contributions of Rome/Rise of Islam

Chapters 1-3

Ch. 1:

 

  1. Compare and contrast modes of travel in A.D. 150 with those in use today.
  2. Assess the impact of modern technology on communication.
  3. List the major reasons for long distance travel in the years between A.D. 150 and 1500.
  4. Describe the early inventions that made traveling by land and sea easier.
  5. Assess the influence of early travelers.
  6. Summarize the limitations of early mapmaking
  7. Describe the sources of information historians use to learn about the past.
  8. Explain how point of view affects our interpretation of historical sources.

1.                  Discuss the role that the provinces played in strengthening and weakening the Roman Empire.

2.                  Explain the causes for the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.

3.                  Explain why the Eastern Roman Empire survived and prospered.

4.                  Discuss the major Asian civilizations in existence at the fall of Rome and their accomplishments.

5.                  List how the cultures of Persia, India, and China came into contact with each other.

6.                  Describe how the Persians, Indians, and Chinese used what they learned from other cultures in their own societies.

7.                  Discuss major Byzantine accomplishments.

8.                  Describe the relationship between the Byzantine Empire and Persia.

1.                  Analyze the effect of geography on the lifestyle of early Arabs.\

2.                  Describe the conditions that lead to the growth of trade in the Arabian   Peninsula.

3.                  Explain the religious significance of Mecca to the early Arabs.

4.                  Identify Muhammad and explain his role in Islam.

5.                  Describe the Qur'an and explain its significance to Muslims.

6.                  List and explain the Five Pillars of Islam.

7.                  Explain how Islam, like other religions, affects all aspects of life.

8.                  Explain the origin of the caliphate.

9.                  Describe how the Muslim Empire expanded under the first four caliphs.

10.              Describe the issue that divided the Islamic Region.
