Course Description:
The
emphasis of our PE courses is to allow students to be involved in physical
education and to have fun while moving. Our program will focus on helping
students develop their individual motor skills, along with strengthening their
group social skills. In addition, our
program will also emphasize developing the student’s problem solving skills
while participating in group & team games and activities. Students will receive a variety of benefits,
including 1) the development of a variety of motor skills; 2) an improved
understanding of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle; 3) an
improved understanding of movement and the human body; 4) an improved knowledge
of rules and strategies of particular games and sports; and 5) self-confidence
and a sense of self-worth in relation to physical education and recreation
games.
Student Objectives:
1. Students will be competent in many movement activities.
2. Students will understand how and why one moves in a variety of
situations.
3. Students will analyze movement performance using scientific
principles of movement.
4. Students will achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of
physical fitness.
5. Students will develop the skills, knowledge and interest to
independently maintain an active lifestyle.
6. Students will choose appropriate movement related activities
according to developmental levels.
7. Students will exhibit a physically active lifestyle and will
understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge
and self-expression.
8. Students will develop a sense of appreciation and aesthetic
pleasure of movement as a performer and observer.
9. Students will demonstrate appropriate social behavior while
participating in movement activities.
10. Students will demonstrate an understanding for the relationship
between movement related activities, their origin, and
how they evolved.
Required Materials:
Students
are required to dress in a PE uniform daily. PE uniform consists of a Douglass shirt,
Douglass shorts, athletic socks and athletic type shoes. Uniforms may be
purchased in the student store. Each item is $10.

Evaluation/Grading
Standards:
Grading
shall consist of three areas; 1) participation/citizenship, 2) skill, 3)
cognitive performance (written work).
1) Participation/Citizenship
= 50% of grade
-Each student may earn up to 5
participation/citizenship points per day for a total of 100 points
per unit.
a) Student will earn 2 points if prepared for class: on time,
dressed, seated quietly in roll call.
b) Student will earn 2 points if they participate and stay on task.
c) Student will earn 1 point if they show respect for teacher and
peers: follows direction, does not use inappropriate language and cooperates
with others.
Students start the unit with
100 participation points and will lose points based on criteria above.
2) Skill
= 25% of grade
-Each student will be evaluated on two movement
skills per unit. Each skill will be evaluated
Based on a five-point rubric. Grade will be based on an
average of the two scores.
3) Cognitive
Performance = 25% of grade
-Each student will be required to complete one
written test, one verbal test, or one essay type writing assignment per unit.
Absences:
Students
will be allowed 4 excused absences per unit. After the fourth, student must
make up the day or lose five participation points. Makeup day will consist of
student participating in five minutes of stretching and 20 minutes of
cardiovascular exercise, (jogging, cycling, power walking, basketball,
rollerblading, etc.) Students must pick up makeup form from teacher and have it
signed by parent or guardian to verify makeup activity. Students
will lose five participation points for each unexcused absence.
Medical Excuses:
Students
will be excused from activity for a maximum of three days with a parent note.
Non-participation beyond three days must have a doctor note. Students must
still dress unless injury prevents it.

5) Encourage students to bring home clothes on Fridays for laundering
