Introduction to Basic Algebra Tools

Pre-algebra – The 2nd grading period

Performance Assessments

The theme is solving one-step equations.  Students will solve equations for the missing number.  For example:  x + 3 = 10.  7 + 3 = 10 so x must be 7.

Tip: The difficulty in this chapter is solving these equations using positive and negative numbers.  For example: x – (-4) = -23.  This is the seventh graders first exploration of abstract concepts in Algebra.  It is also the first chapter that is not a review of the sixth grade work.

Students in chapter 3 will begin to learn all the rules for operations with integers.  Here are some general lessons that can help you learn more about this concept:

Adding integers (add link)

Subtracting integers (add link)

Multiplying integers (add link)

Dividing integers (add link)

This is a continuation of Chapter 3.  The main topic in this chapter is solving two-step equations.  An example would be 2x + 3 = 11.  The words two-step refers to the equation having 2 operations like add and multiply included in one mathematical statement.  These equations take two steps to solve for the missing numbers.

Tip: Most students will be able to transfer their skills from chapter 3 solving equations to this unit.  But again, the inclusion of integers makes solving two-step equations challenging for seventh graders.
