Introduction to Basic Algebra Tools
Pre-algebra – The 1st grading period
Topics include Order of Operations, combining like terms, evaluating expressions, translating word problems into math expressions, and learning mathematical properties.
Tip: This chapter
includes concepts that are building blocks of pre-algebra and algebra. To
succeed in this chapter, students need to have mastered their basic arithmetic
skills in the 6th grade. If
your child still has difficulty adding subtracting, multiplying and dividing
whole numbers, they need additional practice and support in this area.
Examples of standards:
Combining Like Terms: 3a + 2a = 5a
Evaluating Expressions: B – C + A = ? given that B = 10, C = 5, and A = 7
Translation word problems: Translate “a number increased by 2”
into an algebraic expression.
Mathematical Properties: Commutative, Associative, Identity, and Distributive Properties

Douglass Chapter Test, Chapter 1
The main topic is working with negative and positive numbers which we call integers. Students will learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers. In addition, students will use a number line to order integers (which are larger, which are smaller).
Tip: Like chapter
1, the concepts in this chapter are pre-requisites for most if not all of the
following units for pre-algebra. This is one of the most important chapters in
pre-algebra. If you need a refresher course on integers, please click here(link
