Introduction
to Basic Algebra Tools
1st grading
period
Topics include writing algebraic expressions; order of operations; distributive property; operations with integers, fractions, and decimals; basic square roots.
Tip: This chapter
is a review of what students learned in pre-algebra. Students will see a lot
more fractions and decimals being used when solving operations with
integers. Skills needed to succeed in
this chapter is a thorough understanding of addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division rules, particularly when working with positive and
negative fractions/decimals.
Examples of standards:
Simplifying Expressions: 2n + 5 (n + r)
Evaluating Expressions: B – C + A = ? given that B = 10, C = 5, and A = 7
Translation word problems: Translate “a number increased by 2”
into an algebraic expression.
Mathematical Properties: Distributive Property

Students in Chapter 3 will be solving linear equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; solving equations for a specific variable.
Tip: There are very specific steps each student must take to
solve these type of equations. This is
where determination and persistence is an important skill for students to
possess! When students are working at
home, please make sure students are following and writing down all steps in the
process.
