This Day in History:

On this day in 1789, the United States Treasury Department is founded.

 

 Homework Club is every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:00pm-4:00pm in the library.

  

* We need to have lunch forms turned in by Sept 3 anyone who has not turned one in will become full price when we come back to school on Sept 6.

Lunch forms are available in the front office.

 

 *The Music Department will be selling Cotton Candy and Ice Cream Sundaes on Tuesdays and Thursday’s afterschool. They will be $1 each.

 

 *Students please remember to wear your helmets when riding your bicycles, and skateboards to and from school, or you may be cited by the Woodland Police Dept.

This Day in History:

Richard Penn and Arthur Lee, representing the Continental Congress, present the so-called Olive Branch Petition to the Earl of Dartmouth on this day in 1775. Britain’s King George III, however, refused to receive the petition, which, written by John Dickinson, appealed directly to the king and expressed hope for reconciliation between the colonies and Great Britain.

This Day in History:

In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Neutrality Act, or Senate Joint Resolution No. 173, which he calls an "expression of the desire…to avoid any action which might involve [the U.S.] in war." The signing came at a time when newly installed fascist governments in Europe were beginning to beat the drums of war.

This Day in History:

In 1963, John F. Kennedy becomes the first U.S. president to have a direct phone line to the Kremlin in Moscow. The "hotline" was designed to facilitate communication between the president and Soviet premier.

In 1950, President Harry S. Truman issues an executive order putting America’s railroads under the control of the U.S. Army, as of August 27, at 4:00 pm.

  

* No Volleyball tryouts today, they will resume again tomorrow, Thursday from 3-5 p.m.

In 1814, during the War of 1812 between the United States and England, British troops enter Washington, D.C. and burn the White House in retaliation for the American attack on the city of York in Ontario, Canada, in June 1812.

On this day in 1784, four counties in western North Carolina declare their independence as the state of Franklin. The counties lay in what would eventually become Tennessee.

On August 19, 1919, in a break with conventional practice, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson appears personally before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to argue in favor of its ratification of the Versailles Treaty, the peace settlement that ended the First World War.

*Make sure to follow the dress code at all times. No baseball hats may be worn at any time, no tank tops or halter tops of any kind, shorts must be mid-thigh, no South Pole or Ecko clothing may be worn on campus.

 

 *Students the bus will be here today at 2:00pm, so make sure to be out there on time so that you do not miss it.

This Day in History:

On this day in 1781, Patriot forces led by Colonel William Harden and Brigadier General Francis Marion, known as the "Swamp Fox," lure British commander Major Thomas Fraser and his 450 soldiers into an ambush at Parker’s Ferry, 30 miles northwest of Charleston, South Carolina. Meanwhile, 3,000 soldiers set sail with the French fleet on their way to aid the Patriot cause.

 

 *Students if you have not already done so, please stop by the front office and pick up your lunch forms.
